The Best Hiking Trail in San Diego: Potato Chip Rock Mount Woodson

On this episode of Ramona Revealed, we are going to get outside and explore some of the natural beauty Southern California has to offer.

Now that the weather is warming up again, it is time to get back on the hiking trails! I love hiking to get fresh air, exercise, and of course to enjoy the views.

You have probably heard of Mount Woodson. It is my favorite place to go for a convenient hike. It is easily accessible from Ramona and Poway. Plus, it is home to San Diego’s famous Potato Chip Rock!

Mount Woodson has become a hot spot for hikers because it is the tallest peak in the small complex of mountains. The 3,000 foot summit provides great views of the surrounding area.

The Mount Woodson Trail to Potato Chip Rock is a 7.6 mile out and back trail. If you are coming from Ramona, you can access the hike from interstate 67. This shortens the hike to 4 miles. This route is less trafficked and still leads to the famous Potato Chip Rock!

The trail offers plenty of scenic views which makes it pretty popular on the weekends. I recommend getting an early start if you can. The trail ends at a thin, elongated rock that gives hikers the illusion of standing on a cliff even though potato chip rock is only over a small elevation.

You have to go check out the illusion of Potato Chip Rock for yourself! Be sure to bring plenty of water and sunscreen as the hike offers little shade.

If you are a Poway resident parking is always free! If not, on weekends parking costs $10.

You need to check out Mount Woodson and Potato Chip Rock if you haven’t yet! The trail is great and the photo opportunity isn’t too bad either.
